The plane carrying the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II in London

A plane carrying the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II landed in London, where crowds gathered on the way to Buckingham Palace.

A military C-17 Globemaster touched down at RAF Northolt, an Air Force base west of the city, on Tuesday evening, about an hour after leaving Edinburgh, Scotland. Britain’s Prime Minister Liz Truss, Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and a military honor guard waited for the arrival of the coffin at the base.

The Queen’s body is making its last visit from Balmoral Castle in northern Scotland, where the monarch died at the age of 96 on Thursday after 70 years on the throne.

It will be overtaken by the thousands who gathered along the roads in the rain to pay their last respects. King Charles III and other family members close to the late Queen will meet the coffin at Buckingham Palace.
