Suspected gas explosion in Russian Far East kills nine: report

Nine people were killed in a suspected gas explosion early Saturday at a five-story residential building on Russia’s southeastern Sakhalin island.

The TASS news agency reported that the explosion occurred in a brick building built in the 1980s in the village of Timovskoye.

“Nine people were killed, including four children,” the region’s governor, Valery Limarenko, told the Rossiya 24 television channel.

The Emergencies Ministry said preliminary information pointed to a gas leak, adding that several floors had collapsed.

Pictures broadcast on television showed a white building with brown balconies partially demolished.

The Emergencies Ministry said 60 rescue workers had been deployed.
