Super Typhoon Nanmadol hits Japan’s Kyushu island

Typhoon Nanmadol bore off on Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu on Sunday with “never experienced before” warnings of thunderstorms and high waves by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The season’s 14th storm, which is classified as a super typhoon by the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center, could bring record rain, the JMA said, warning of the risk of overflowing rivers and landslides.

Southern Kyushu could see up to 500 mm (20 inches) of rain and winds of up to 250 kmph (155 mph) on Sunday, while the central Tokai region could receive 300 mm (12 inches) of rain, the agency forecast. .

Railway operators have canceled trains in the region, with convenience store chain Seven-Eleven Japan temporarily closing about 950 stores.

The storm is forecast to pass over Japan’s main island of Honshu early next week before turning east and heading into the sea by Wednesday.
