Russia-Ukraine war: Mexico proposes international peace panel that includes PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Mexico on Thursday formally proposed the formation of a peace committee with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said a panel for dialogue and peace in Ukraine should be formed with Modi, Pope Francis and other leaders, to boost UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ mediation efforts.

“The objective will be very clear, creating new mechanisms for dialogue and additional space for mediation that fosters trust, defuses tensions and opens the way to lasting peace”, Ebrard told the Security Council in Ukraine. said in the briefing.

He presented to the council a proposal made by Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador in his Independence Day speech on Friday.

In that speech, Obrador said that the panel, along with Modi and Francis, should “demand to immediately end hostilities in Ukraine and start direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky”.

The Security Council – and the international community – have been unable to find a way to end the invasion, as Russia has a veto on the Security Council.

India has maintained a sort of neutrality on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, avoiding critical votes in the Council and General Assembly condemning Moscow.

But New Delhi, which has close historical ties with Moscow, has consistently called for an end to the war.

Last week, Modi personally delivered a strong message to Putin against the aggression.

During the meeting in Samarkand, Modi told them, “Today’s era is not the era of war. We have discussed with you many times over the phone that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue touch the whole world.”

Speaking at the Council after Ebbard, India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated New Delhi’s call to end the conflict and return to talks.

Pope Francis, on the other hand, has explicitly condemned Russia.
