Queen Elizabeth II left Buckingham Palace for the last time on Wednesday as her coffin began the journey to Westminster Hall, where the late monarch will remain in state.

The Queen’s coffin, draped in the royal standard and topped with the Imperial State Crown, was placed on a horse-drawn gun carriage from the front gate of her London residence at 2.22 pm local time (6.22 am IST).

The crowds across the country are the latest expression of mourning and respect for what most Britons have ever known, who died Thursday at their beloved Balmoral summer retreat at the age of 96, ending a 70-year reign.

The C-17 Globemaster has also been used to carry humanitarian aid and weapons to Ukraine after the Russian invasion. The plane landed at RAF Northolt before being taken to Buckingham Palace, where it was met by King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla, as well as other members of the royal family.

Earlier on Tuesday, King Charles left Scotland for Northern Ireland as part of his Operation Spring Tide tour of state mourning in various parts of the United Kingdom.

He visited Belfast for the first time as monarch and met with political and religious leaders from Northern Ireland and attended a prayer service at St. Anne’s Cathedral.

“Now, with that shining example before me, and with God’s help, I take on my new duties, determined to seek the welfare of all the inhabitants of Northern Ireland. During the years of my mother’s reign, such It has been a privilege for me to witness the dedicated life. May it be granted to all of us for completing the tasks before us so well,” he said in a brief statement.

The King is due to visit Wales over the weekend ahead of formal events and audience plans, as world leaders begin arriving in the UK for a state funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday morning.
