Ahead of Saudi Arabia’s National Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his best wishes to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and invited him to visit India at the earliest.

He met the Saudi Crown Prince in Jeddah on Sunday and handed over a written message from Prime Minister Modi, congratulating Saudi Arabia on the upcoming National Day of Saudi Arabia on 23 September and inviting the Crown Prince to visit India at the earliest. stated in the press release.

Crown Prince Mohammed made his first state visit to India in February 2019.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported that during the meeting, the bilateral relations between the two countries and opportunities to enhance them were reviewed and the latest regional and international developments as well as the efforts being made for them were discussed.

Earlier on Sunday in Riyadh, Mr Jaishankar held talks with his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan and discussed current global political as well as economic issues and agreed to work together in G-20 and multilateral organisations.

The two Ministers co-chaired the inaugural meeting of the Committee for Political, Security, Social and Cultural Cooperation (PSSC) under the framework of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council.

The two ministers assessed the positive progress in bilateral relations in all areas, including political, trade, energy, investment, defence, security and culture.

Several areas have been identified to further enhance bilateral cooperation such as food security, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, defense industry and entertainment, said the Indian Embassy press release.

The two ministers supported the work of four joint working groups of the PSSC (political and consular; defence; legal and security; and social and cultural) as well as meetings of senior officials. They also discussed better coordination between the two countries in multilateral organizations, especially the G20, the statement said.

Shri Jaishankar met Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf on 10 September and discussed India-GCC relations.

Shri Jaishankar and the GCC Secretary General also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Mechanism of Consultation between India and the GCC. The MoU provides for the institutionalization of the annual dialogue between India and the GCC and the establishment of working groups on various areas of cooperation.

India and Saudi Arabia enjoy cordial and friendly relations reflecting centuries-old economic and socio-cultural ties. Saudi Arabia is the fourth largest trading partner of India.

More than 18% of India’s crude oil imports come from Saudi Arabia. During FY22 (April-December), bilateral trade was valued at $29.28 billion.

During this period, India’s imports from Saudi Arabia were worth $22.65 billion and exports to Saudi Arabia were worth $6.63 billion.

According to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, the approximately 2.2 million-strong Indian community is the largest expatriate community in the Kingdom.

The top leadership of the two countries remained in close contact even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
