Mexico proposes UN panel to include PM Modi to bring peace between Russia, Ukraine

Mexico has proposed to the United Nations to set up a committee which will include Prime Minister Narendra ModiPope Francis and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to mediate lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casabón proposed the proposal while participating in a UN Security Council debate on Ukraine in New York on Thursday.

Modi, who met Putin on the sidelines of the 22nd Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, told the Russian leader that “today’s era is not of war”. He said the objective of the committee would be to create new mechanisms for dialogue and create a complementary space for mediation to build trust. Decrease stress and open the way to lasting peace.

Casabon said that the Mexican delegation will continue with the necessary consultations with the UN Secretary-General to contribute in generating broad support for the mediation efforts for the Committee, “which we hope will be formed with the support of the UN Member States”. “Indifference is unacceptable, just as it is unacceptable to lament only at the fact that, so far, in the case of the question, the Security Council has not been able to fulfill its essential responsibility,” he said.

“The reasons for this council’s malfunction are well known. It is up to us to fix them. In all seriousness, the time is right to consider the structural reforms needed to make this happen,” Casabon said.
