Women of the royal family, including non-functioning royal families, must wear some form of traditional black lace veil to the emperor’s funeral due to a long-standing royal tradition.
The rule would apply to both Kate and Meghan Markle. An expert in the royal family told AFP that the “veil of mourning” signifies that the wearer is in mourning, while allowing more privacy for the wearer to mourn.
As the Independent reports, female members of the royal family who wore veils to Prince Philip’s funeral in April last year opted for a more subtle version of the traditional long black tulle veil.
Additionally, all members of the Royal Family will be dressed in black, which they have been following since the Queen’s death was announced.
Queen Elizabeth IIBritain’s longest-reigning monarch, will be buried at Westminster Abbey on 19 September. His funeral would be the first state funeral in Britain since that of former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.
