India ‘strongly condemns’ attacks on ‘Hinduism symbols’ in Leicester

India on Monday condemned the violence against the Indian community in Leicester, England and demanded immediate action against those involved in the attacks.

The Indian High Commission issued a statement on Monday saying that it has taken up the matter with the UK authorities.

“We strongly condemn the violence against the Indian community in Leicester and the vandalism of Hindu symbols and premises. We have strongly taken up this matter with the UK authorities and demand immediate action against those involved in these attacks. We call upon the authorities to provide security to the affected people,” the statement read.

A series of violence broke out on 28 August after India won the Asia Cup T20 match against Pakistan. According to a police statement, a clash broke out between groups of youths in Leicestershire on Sunday. At least 15 people have been arrested in this case so far.

Several videos and reports are also circulating on social media about Pakistani organized gangs seen sabotaging and terrorizing Hindus in the UK city of Leicester. The incident follows violence and disorder in the eastern part of the city.

Reports of violence in Leicester

On 28 August, there was a report of violence after India won the match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022, following which a fight broke out at Melton Road, Belgrave, which has led to the arrest of 27 people so far. A UK-based media publication has reported. News agency ANI reported the Leicester Mercury.

Following the incident, Leicestershire Police assured talks with the support of local community leaders and calls for calm.

The police called for peace and asked everyone to return home and share the information that has been verified and true.

Following reports of clashes on Saturday night, Rob Nixon, temporary chief constable of Leicestershire Police, said in a video message shared on the Twitter handle: “We have received multiple reports of a disorder in the streets of Leicester tonight, Saturday, September 17. We have officers there, we are controlling the situation, there are additional officers on the way and dispersal powers, stop search powers, have been authorized. Please don’t get involved. We are calling for peace. “
