China lodges protest, says Biden’s remarks violate US policy on Taiwan

Beijing: China said on Monday that President Joe Biden said Washington would defend Taiwan against a Chinese invasion, adding that it had recorded a “tough representation” with the US, adding that his remarks had been on the island for a long time. “Seriously violates” ongoing US policy.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning regularly said, “The US side has seriously violated the One China Principle, three Sino-US joint communiqués, seriously violated the US commitment not to support Taiwan independence.” And Taiwan’s independence has sent seriously wrong signals to separatist forces.” Press briefing on Monday.

“China has filed harsh representations. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China. In the meantime, we will not tolerate any activity aimed at dividing China and we reserve all options to take the necessary measures,” Mao said.

In an interview on Sunday, Biden was asked whether US troops would defend Taiwan, and replied, “Yes, if indeed, there was an unprecedented attack.”

Asked again during an interview with CBS 60 Minutes whether he meant that unlike Ukraine, US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, Biden said: “Yes.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted sharply to Biden’s statement.

“We are ready to do our best to strive for peaceful reunification. At the same time, we will not tolerate any activity aimed at secession,” Mao said.

China claims self-governing democracy as a broken territory and has not ruled out the use of military force to merge it with the mainland.

Mao said that China has the right to take all necessary measures in response to activities that tear the nation apart.

Mao urged Washington to handle Taiwan-related issues “carefully and properly”, and not to send false signals to “Taiwan independence separatist forces”.

The spokesman warned the US not to seriously damage China-US relations and peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned against playing with fire on Taiwan in a call with Biden ahead of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in late July.

“Those who play with fire will perish by it. It is hoped that the US will be clear about this,” a Chinese foreign ministry said on a phone call.

The warnings did not deter Pelosi from visiting Taiwan in early August, triggering fiery statements from Beijing and an unprecedented People’s Liberation Army (PLA) drill around the island.

Last week, China said it strongly opposes the Taiwan Policy Act 2022 approved by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee and urged Washington to stop considering it.

The Taiwan Policy Act of 2022 aims to increase the US military provision for Taiwan, authorizing the government to approve $6.5 billion over the next five years.
