Biden says Russia ‘shamelessly violated’ UN Charter with war in Ukraine

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that Russia “shamelessly violated” the basic principles of the UN Charter with its “brutal, unnecessary war” in Ukraine.

Biden’s response came as he took center stage on the world stage to mobilize international support for Ukraine following Moscow’s military escalation and new nuclear threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We will stand in solidarity against Russia’s aggression. Duration.”

Addressing the 77th session of the UN General Assembly at UN Headquarters in New York, Biden said reports of Russian abuse against civilians in Ukraine “will make your blood run cold”.

He said Putin’s new nuclear threats against Europe showed “reckless disregard” of his country’s responsibilities as a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. Putin has not attended the United Nations since 2015, the year he sent military planes to Syria.

A day earlier, France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Olaf Scholz criticized Putin’s aggression and accused him of “imperialism”.
