A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hits Mexico’s Pacific coast, no major damage reported

Mexico City: A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico’s central Pacific coast on Monday, sounding an earthquake alarm on the anniversary of the first two devastating earthquakes. According to the US Geologic Survey, there were no immediate reports of any significant damage from the quake that struck at 1:05 p.m. local time, which initially had a magnitude of 7.5.

It said the quake was centered 37 km (23 mi) southeast of Aquila, near the border of the states of Colima and Michoacan and at a depth of 15.1 km (9.4 mi). Michoacan’s Department of Public Safety said there were no immediate reports of significant damage in that state beyond a few cracks in buildings in the city of Colcomán.

Mexico’s National Civil Protection Agency said the Navy’s Tsunami Center had not issued an alert because no change in sea level was expected due to the epicenter’s position. However, it contradicted the US Tsunami Warning Center’s alert. It said dangerous tsunami waves were possible for coasts within 186 miles (300 km) of the quake’s epicenter.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also tweeted that there were no reports of damage in the capital. The alarm for the new earthquake came less than an hour after the earthquake alarm sounded in a nationwide earthquake simulation marking the major, deadly earthquakes that occurred on the same date in 1985 and 2017.

Humberto Garza stands holding his 3-year-old son outside a restaurant in the Roma area of Mexico City. Like many milling about outside after the quake, Garza said the earthquake alarm sounded immediately after the annual simulation that he wasn’t sure was real. “I heard the alarm, but it sounded really far away,” he said.

Dozens of workers waited outside the city’s environmental ombudsman’s office. Some were seen moving. Electricity was cut off in parts of the city, including stoplights, disrupting the capital’s already infamous traffic jam.
