Fitness Tips: Common Mistakes on the Weight Loss Journey

while the regular exercise And while it’s important to work on seeing a difference in our weight scale, a few achievable changes to our diet and simple tricks can speed up the weight loss process. However, despite sticking DietBy making changes in eating habits and lifestyle, some people do not lose weight quickly or achieve weight loss results, even though they are reportedly making healthier choices.

This could be because they are following obsolete or misguided advice and in the age of carelessly passed health tips, it is easy to fall into the trap of fitness misconceptions. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Prateek Lamechwal, Advance Nutrition and Fitness Coach at FITTR, lists down some common mistakes that you should pay attention to in your weight loss journey:

1. Not counting calories – Calorie deficit is very important for weight loss. Many people forget that losing weight is effective when you burn more calories than you consume. Therefore, keeping track of your nutrient intake for the day can go a long way in reducing obesity.

2. Setting short term goals – Losing weight is not a difficult task, it is difficult to maintain it for a long time. This is the reason why many people lose most of their weight in a very short period of time. Therefore, I suggest being consistent and developing long-term goals is essential throughout one’s weight loss journey. Focus on making lifestyle changes. This will help develop healthy eating and exercise routines that will yield great benefits in the long run.

3. Obsessed about your weight – Weight loss isn’t always going to be linear. To lose weight, it is important to maintain your muscle mass and reduce your body fat percentage. Therefore, the right way to lose fat is to focus on losing inches, maintaining your strength and stamina, and focusing on your daily energy levels.

4. Too Much Cardio – Cardio is a great way to workout when it comes to burning calories. However, too much cardio can lead to muscle loss, which can cause the skin to become loose and flaky. Therefore, combining weight training and cardio exercise during the week is not only a sustainable strategy to lose fat but also a great way to build and tone muscle.

Adding to the list of common mistakes, dietitian Mack, co-founder and CMO of Fitelo, recommends avoiding these weight loss mistakes:

1. Calorie Counting – In today’s diet culture, we ask a dieter to reduce calories further and eat less that already has drawbacks and health conditions. Going into an extreme calorie deficit can worsen health conditions and completely break down the body’s metabolism. Instead we should focus on nutritious food. Nutrition isn’t about counting calories; It’s about micro and macros. For example, vitamin deficiencies and metabolic or hormonal disorders like PCOD and thyroid cannot be managed if we blindly follow the concept of calorie counting.

2. Keto/Intermittent (fad diet culture)- If we talk about keto diet, then it includes consuming only fat and protein and giving up carbs. Skipping carbs is a dangerous way to lose weight. You will only disturb your body’s natural hormonal balance by giving up or restricting carbs unnecessarily. So, if you think that following a low-carb or no-carb diet, like the keto diet, will help you lose weight, you can lose weight temporarily, such as for a month. But without carbs, you won’t be able to maintain that weight loss, and all that lost weight will come back quickly!

3. Weight Loss Shakes/Supplements – Companies promote their shakes as meal replacements but they don’t contain enough calories to make up a meal, resulting in fatal nutrient deficiencies. There have been several reports of suspected liver damage caused by these weight loss products. Also, when you switch your life to a regular diet, these dabba-life products badly damage your metabolism. It is highly processed. Its ingredients include protein isolates, added sugars, gums, artificial flavors and emulsifiers. Some weight loss products contain caffeine as it increases metabolism. However, caffeine has many harmful effects. It raises blood pressure, depletes the body’s minerals, and can cause anxiety and imbalances in blood sugar levels, causing people to overeat or crave sugar or carbs.

4. Going on Gluten Free Diet – To go gluten-free, you’ll need to change your entire lifestyle to include other grains and give up wheat. Plus, gluten-free isn’t readily available everywhere. According to a research paper titled “Gluten-free Diets and Nutrient Deficiencies: A Review,” gluten-free diets can lead to potential nutrient imbalances resulting in improper nutritional quality of the diet. Plus, gluten-free foods don’t necessarily mean healthy. It has nothing to do with weight loss. Just because something is gluten-free doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain a lot of sodium, sugar, oils, dyes, chemicals, and preservatives.
