Bogibeel river cruise service from Varanasi to start from early 2023

country’s longest river cruise service between Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Bogibeel Assam Will start from the beginning of 2023, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Monday.

It will cover a distance of over 4,000 kms via the Ganges, the Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR) and the Brahmaputra.

The minister said that this would give an opportunity to the people of Assam to use the waterway to promote trade and livelihood in tourism and cargo transport.

The Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said, “Our government is identifying ways to promote inland shipping, river cruise tourism and construction of suitable terminals in the Brahmaputra.”

On Monday, the minister launched several projects for the development of Bogibeel area near Dibrugarh in Assam. In this regard, the Minister laid the foundation stone for the construction of two floating ferries at Bogibeel and Guijan.

He also inaugurated Bogibeel Riverfront Passenger Jetty.

The two floating jetties at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh district and Guizan in Tinsukia district of the north eastern state will be built as state-of-the-art terminals using the most advanced and state-of-the-art technology.

Both the ghats are being constructed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India on National Waterway-2 (NW-2), which is known as the Brahmaputra River.

The work has been entrusted to Coastal Consolidated Structures Pvt Ltd on Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) contract mode.

The cost of construction of two ghats is estimated to be 8.25 crore and is scheduled to be completed by February next year.
