Signs of aging also show up in your skin as it loses fat and becomes thin, uneven and loose. While many of these processes are taking place at the physiological level, environmental factors that accelerate aging cannot be ignored. There are certain things that we all are doing on a daily basis that are accelerating the aging process without us knowing it. So, what could they all be? How we eat, drink, move, can play an important role in aging.
Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant Dermatologist and Venereologist in the Department of Dermatology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, tells us 4 everyday habits that are making us age faster.
1. Inflammatory Diet
Lifestyle becomes a very important factor as we age. Now there are many contributing things in our lifestyle which includes our diet. The kind of diet we eat basically consists of inflammatory or non-inflammatory ingredients. People who follow an anti-inflammatory diet may face earlier cell death because cells are under the influence of an enzyme called telomerase, which is responsible for cellular aging.
2. Smoking and Alcohol
Addictions such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and poor dietary choices all contribute to increased stress and inflammation in our bodies. It also makes our body more acidic and less alkaline which also accelerates the aging process. It is important to consume a diet that is rich in antioxidants, which will act as an anti-aging mechanism. Turning to foods that are rich in omega-3s such as walnuts, healthy oils, can all help with anti-aging.
3. Not Using Sunscreen
There is a thing called solar damage that leads to solar aging and this can happen to you if you do not use sunscreen regularly. Research has shown that solar aging can actually accelerate the aging process as it leads to excessive collagen breakdown. It is essential to use sunscreen with a higher sun protection factor that is your SPF, but at the same time your sunscreen should also provide PPD protection which is measured by our triple plus sign or other measurements.
4. Not Exercising
In conclusion, I would like to add that exercise becomes a very necessary component of anti-aging. Exercise helps us to maintain the tone and texture of existing muscles as well as bring in new muscle strength.
