According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Muifa is expected to maintain its strength and hit Ishigaki Island near Taiwan on September 12.

Typhoon Muifa approached Japan’s southern islands on September 11, prompting officials to issue warnings to locals to seek shelter from “violent waves and winds” before landfall.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Muifa is expected to maintain its strength and hit Ishigaki Island near Taiwan before turning north toward Shanghai and its surrounding areas on September 12.

As of Sunday afternoon, the typhoon was located 180 kilometers (110 mi) south of Ishigaki, moving at 216 kph, the agency said.

“Very strong Typhoon Muifa is expected to move very close (in the vicinity of Ishigaki) on Monday. Violent waves and wind is very likely in the area till Tuesday,” the agency said.

Although the speed of the thunderstorm may slow down, “the region may remain under its influence for a long time”, it added.

The government of Okinawa – a prefecture consisting of more than 150 of Japan’s southernmost islands – urged elders on Ishigaki and other region islands to seek shelter before a typhoon hit the region.

“I would like to ask everyone to be alert for violent winds, heavy rain. And take action to protect lives as a top priority,” Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki said on September 11.
