At a time when the indigenous semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express is creating a lot of hype, the South Western Railway (SWR) has proposed to the Railway Board to operate new generation trains on three routes connecting Bengaluru.

The proposed routes are Bengaluru to Coimbatore, Bengaluru to Chennai and Bengaluru to Hubli.

Sources in SWR said that the proposed routes for Vande Bharat were based on their popularity and viability. “The proposal has been formally submitted to the Railway Board. The board will take the final decision on starting new services. The number of rakes, schedule and others will be decided by the Railway Board,” he said.

“We are hoping that those who depend on air travel on these routes may also shift to Vande Bharat. The travel experience in the new trains will be better in terms of speed and travel comfort, with improved seating areas, user-friendly features, design-wise aesthetic features of the coach,” said sources.

Railways says speed, safety and services are the hallmarks of Vande Bharat Express. A few days back, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the third Vande Bharat trial run between Mumbai and Ahmedabad was successfully completed and the train was operated at a maximum speed of 180 kmph in stationary condition. It accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 52 seconds. The Minister said that the green signal has been received from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Integral Coach Factory in Chennai will run 75 Vande Bharat Express trains.

Sources said that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had requested the Railways to run Vande Bharat train between Hubli and Bengaluru. “The doubling of track between Hubli and Bengaluru will provide a more conducive environment for running Vande Bharat trains. Between Hubli and Bengaluru, a doubling line is pending at a distance of 45 km between South Hubli and Haveri. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. SWR is also targeting electrification of the line by March 2023. Once the doubling is complete, it will also help in reducing the travel time of existing trains to an hour as the curves flatten and permanent speed restrictions are removed,” said a source.
