The Lucknow Sessions Court has adjourned till September 29 the hearing of Siddiqui Kappan’s bail plea in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case registered by the Enforcement Directorate. The regular sessions court of Additional District Judge-I, which was to hear the bail application moved by Siddiqui Kappan on Friday, deferred the hearing as judges were not available.

“The Additional District Judge (ADJ) of the regular sessions court did not sit on 1 Friday, 23 September. The application was transferred to another court but that court was not ready for hearing today. We requested to give the next date for Monday, 26 September. But the hearing was adjourned to the next available date of the regular court, which is on September 29,” said Mohd Dhanish KS, Mr. Kappan’s counsel. Hindu.

The Supreme Court (SC) had on September 9 granted bail to Mr. Kappan in other cases, but the journalist is still in Lucknow jail as he is yet to get relief in the PMLA case.

Mr Kappan, who originally hails from Kerala, worked as a reporter for Malayalam news website Azeemukham and also held the position of secretary in the Delhi unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), in October 2020. Since his arrest, he has been lodged in jails of Uttar Pradesh. When he was on his way to Hathras, where a Dalit woman was allegedly raped to death. Mr Kappan was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Information Technology (IT) Act, apart from the PMLA.
