Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on September 12 said that the Center is working on doubling the ship breaking capacity at Alang yard in Gujarat, which will eventually double the employment opportunities.

Shri Sonowal, in his inaugural address at the International Conference on ‘Green Ship Recycling and Vehicle Scraping’ at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, said the ship-breaking units at Alang in Bhavnagar district produce 3.5 million tonnes of steel by recycling around 200 ships every year. Huh.

“The industry provides direct employment to 15,000 people and indirect employment to 1.5 lakh people,” the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways said.

“The proposed expansion plan to double the capacity of the yard will also double the employment opportunities, which will bring economic prosperity to the entire region,” the minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sonowal said that all stakeholders need to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision on green ship recycling and vehicle scrapping to protect the environment, ecology and biodiversity.

As for the vehicle scrappage policy announced by the Prime Minister last year, Mr. Sonowal said that his ministry is conducting a study to formulate a strategy to promote the policy through coastal shipping.

He also announced that a regional trans-shipment terminal would be developed in Gujarat as a hub and spoke model under the policy.

Giving a status report on the ambitious Sagarmala project launched by the Center to promote port-led development in India, Mr Sonowal said that 802 projects worth Rs 5.45 lakh crore have been targeted to be executed by 2035. So far Rs 1.12 lakh crore has been completed.

“Projects like port modernization, rail, road, cruise tourism, ro-ro ferry, ro-pax ferry, passenger ferries and skill development have been taken up,” he said.

“74 projects worth ₹57,000 crore are being implemented in Gujarat under the Sagarmala programme. Of these, 15 projects worth ₹9,000 crore have been completed, 33 projects worth ₹25,000 crore are under implementation and 26 projects worth ₹22,700 crore are under development. under” he said.

He said, “Out of the total 74 projects, 11 projects worth Rs 1,581 crore were partially funded by the ministry. While Ro-PAX ​​service between Ghogha and Hazira has already started, the same between Pipavav and Muldwarka. This type of service has been approved.”

Speaking on the occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel told the audience that his government has already given permission to cancel around 1.75 lakh two-wheelers, 65,000 four-wheelers and 14,000 heavy vehicles in the state.
