The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday said that religious preachers from Kashmir are being booked for inciting youth.

At least eight religious preachers, including three prominent Islamic scholars, have been arrested in the Kashmir Valley in the last three days.

“they [the preachers] Warnings were given but they did not listen. They were booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for instigating the youth despite giving several warnings,” said Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar.

“There are reports that some clerics are also doing the same exercise. Soon after getting proper evidence, they will also be booked,” Mr Kumar said.

He said some clerics were being “sensitive and let go”. “PSA is the last option when one indulges in wrong practice. Maintaining law and order is not only the duty of the police but also of the people. People can play an important role in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere,” Mr Kumar said.

He said the police had enough evidence against the religious clerics. “The police have a lot of evidence against them. We can also share with the media if needed.”

Mr Kumar said that the police were also keeping an eye on the members of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami. “We are getting reports that some JeI leaders are secretly doing activities in Kashmir. Police is monitoring and action will be taken against whoever is found involved.

Those arrested so far include Maulana Abdul Rashid Dawoodi, patron of Tehreek-e-Sautul Auliya, and prominent figures of Jamiat-Ahle Hadith Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed Veeri and Abdul Majeed Dar Almadani. Banned JEI’s Faheem Ramzan and Ghazi Moinuddin were also arrested.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a group of religious bodies in the Valley, has condemned the recent arrests of Islamic scholars.

“It is condemnable to arrest religious scholars and preachers of Kashmir and book them under PSA. An MMU spokesperson said that these actions are inappropriate and are causing severe anger among the people.

He said that the main task of scholars and preachers is to propagate Islam, spread the message of humanity and love and make positive efforts for truth, righteousness and betterment of society.

The MMU demanded the release of all arrested clerics and pracharaks and jailed politicians and youths.
