Paddy crop has been affected due to less rain. The ministry in its first advance estimate has projected a 6% decline in the production of Kharif rice to 104.99 million tonnes.

There has also been a marginal decrease in sowing of pulses, the ministry said, as the total coverage so far this kharif season stood at 132.83 lakh hectares as against 138.29 lakh hectares in the year-ago period.

There was a slight decrease in the area under sowing of tur, urad, moong, kulthi and other pulses during the said period.

The area under sowing of oilseeds so far this kharif season is 191.75 lakh hectares as against 193.28 lakh hectares in the same period a year ago, mainly due to sowing of groundnut and slight shortage of soybean.

However, so far this kharif season, sowing of coarse cereals has been higher in 181.43 lakh hectares as against 174.05 lakh hectares in the year-ago period.

Among cash crops, the area under cotton was 127.39 lakh hectare as against 118.56 lakh hectare, while the area under jute/mesta was marginally at 6.95 lakh hectare during the said period.

The data shows that the area under sugarcane so far this kharif season was 55.66 lakh hectare as against 55.22 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
