Media not forming public opinion, but only reflects market sentiments: Allidom

Media these days is only reflecting market sentiments and not trying to create critical public opinion on socio-political issues, said academic and speaker Sunil P. Allidom has said.

He was here on Saturday. Rajesh was delivering a lecture on ‘Democracy and Media’ organized by Memorial Charitable Trust.

Mr Allydom said that the media is rapidly losing its independence in the country as the revenue model for its functioning was based on the income generated from advertisements. Because of this, the capitalist interests of advertisers were gaining prominence in the news. Although there were thousands of media organizations in India, four or five outlets were controlling the market.

“There is no pluralism, and separate voices are not being heard. Another visible trend is the convergence of content creators and distributors. Marketing managers and circulation managers are making the final decision on the presentation or publication of news,” he explained. Thus, the media is losing its power to critically analyze issues concerning people, he said.

“The working of the media is supposed to be based on information, interpretation and criticism. However, this has been changed to information, controversy and entertainment. There is a curious mix of information and entertainment, also titled ‘infotainment’,” said Mr. Allidom Told.

“We have news debates on TV channels these days. But in reality they are not debates, but just heated arguments where people try to score on others. There are no attempts to inform, learn or expand the horizons of knowledge,” he claimed.

This program was organized on the occasion of second death anniversary of former news editor Rajesh madhyamam Daily. Trust officials Feros Khan and Kamal Vardur were present among others.
