Himachal CM: BJP will not engage in freebie war; Fight only against ‘leaderless’ Congress

BJP Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has said that the contestants will not join the freebie fight in Himachal Pradesh. Citing the “interest of the state”, Thakur claimed that the BJP would not go beyond providing 125 units of electricity free of cost as “we have done what was worth doing”.

This approach seems in line with the Prime Minister Narendra ModiConstant rhetoric against Rewari (freebie) culture. The Supreme Court is also aware of this matter.

in one Exclusive conversation with Indian ExpressThakur said, “It is a matter of happiness and pride to be declared the CM candidate again. But it also brings a great responsibility. Now it is my duty to bring the party back to power.

Referring to the announcement of free pre-poll gifts by the Congress and AAP, the Chief Minister said, “The people of Himachal are smart enough to sabotage such hollow promises. They’re not fools.”

Acknowledging the “oldest party” as his main rival, he says that the “Congress is leaderless” in the absence of the late Virbhadra Singh. The third-ranked Aam Aadmi Party is in no danger as they have no stand in the state, which usually sees a fight between the BJP and the Congress.

Thakur is confident of changing the state’s custom, which has not given the party a second consecutive term in power in a long time. “We will come back with a comfortable majority,” he says.
