Former Speaker of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Sedapatti R. Muttiah died on Wednesday at a private hospital in Madurai.

He was 76 years old. He is survived by wife Shakuntala and four children.

Muttiah, who was the former Chief Minister between 1991 and 1996, J. Jayalalithaa’s first regime, switched allegiance to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 2006 after being an AIADMK MLA from Sedapatti assembly constituency in Madurai district.

He registered a hat-trick win in the constituency after winning for the first time since the founding of the AIADMK by MG Ramachandran in 1977. He won from the constituency in 1980, 1984 and 1991.

Subsequently, he also became the party’s MP from Periyakulam Lok Sabha constituency in Theni district between 1989-91 and 1998-99.

He also became the Minister of Surface Transport in 1998 during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government at the Center and served for a brief period.

She earned the wrath of the then AIADMK supremo, Jayalalithaa, after she forgot to vote on the no-confidence motion brought against the Vajpayee government in 1999. They expelled Muttiah, who was also the party treasurer, from the primary membership. Party in April 2000.
