The university is in the process of inviting foreign ambassadors posted in India to instil confidence about the changing situation in Kashmir.

Taking advantage of the “peace dividend”, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir (SKUAST-K) on Monday introduced open admissions for foreign students in the Valley for the first time, and it is in the process. Inviting Ambassadors from abroad posted in India to “instill confidence about the changing situation in J&K”.

“Kashmir lags behind what happened in the 1990s. We saw the collapse of institutions. Otherwise, Kashmir would have been the center of knowledge export. Now, we are getting a flat area. We are sure to bring back what was lost. As a first step, this year the admission of foreign students has started on a large scale.

A brochure for admitting foreign students for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses was launched on Monday at the main campus of SKUAST-K in Shalimar, Srinagar. It offers admission to foreign students twice a year for the autumn and spring sessions, as opposed to the autumn sessions only for national students.

“This will allow foreign students to process their applications without wasting time. The admission process will be easy and credit based, similar to the way foreign universities attract our students. Kashmir will provide the best platform to allow students to test their innovations, given the geographical location,” Mr. Ganai said.

The brochure tells how the situation in Kashmir has changed under the BJP rule and after Kashmir was downgraded Article 370 in 2019.

With the new political initiatives taken by the present government, inner peace, prosperity and peace have been restored in Kashmir, which is evident from the lakhs of tourists who visited in 2022. It is a vital component for welcoming students from abroad, reads the brochure.

“We are planning to invite ambassadors from abroad to Kashmir soon for an education fair. We will also involve Indian consulates present across the world to promote the overseas entry scheme,” said Mr. Ganai.

The university aims to initially focus on students from Central Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. “The courses will be cost-effective for foreign students. We provide the best faculty and continue to climb the ranks in India in many respects including innovation,” said Mr. Ganai.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has been supportive of the university’s efforts to bring in foreign students. This will be more than the admission quota and can go up to 25 per cent of the total seats.

“It is an ambitious project. We intend to create an ecosystem and inspire others as well. This will also give a boost to education tourism. Students may not need to go to places like Bangladesh and Ukraine,” Mr. Ganai he said.

The university hoped that foreign students would help in the much needed intermingling of cultures. “Our ‘Kashmiriyat’ culture is about peace, harmony and love. It’s time to export this idea to the outside world. Kashmir is also a crime free zone,” the VC said.

The university has decided to allow foreign students to shape their course preferences. “We are providing the degree by design system. It is the students who will decide about the syllabus. We offer sandwich courses. Our doctoral degrees will offer cross-university exposure and a dual degree system from two campuses for greater exposure.”

SKUAST-K has several campuses in the valley offering various courses, with many campuses located outside the capital city of Srinagar.
