Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal made a big promise: ‘If we get control over MCD…’

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday made a big promise to Delhiites that if his Aam Aadmi Party gets control of the MCD, it will “beautify” the national capital. During a press conference, the AAP chief also accused the existing MCD of trying to turn the city into a city of “garbage mountains”. The chief minister alleged that the civic body has plans to build 16 new landfill sites. At present, three landfill sites – Ghazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa – are located on the borders of Delhi.

“People living around these landfill sites are affected by the foul smell emanating from these garbage mounds and many other issues. Their life is literally like hell. We have heard that there are plans to build 16 new garbage mountains in the national capital,” CM he said.

On the other hand, he said, the AAP government is developing Delhi into a city of parks and lakes. “Today Delhi is known for its education and health facilities and these people want to turn it into a city of mountains of garbage. The government is working to make Delhi a city of tricolours, lakes and parks and these people make it a city. Want to turn into a city of mountains of garbage,” Kejriwal said.

“If given an opportunity, we will beautify the national capital in a time bound manner,” he said. Sisodia had made similar allegations on Thursday as well.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, in a statement on Thursday, said it is “working tirelessly” to level up three existing landfill sites in the city. “It has come to the notice of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that some claims have been made that the Corporation has planned to set up new sanitary landfill sites at 16 locations in Delhi.

It had said, “MCD vehemently denies the allegations and wishes to state very clearly that there are no plans to set up any new sanitary landfill sites.”

AAP has launched a month-long campaign to highlight the failures of the BJP-ruled civic body. As part of the campaign, groups led by AAP MLAs tried to reach the Ghazipur and Okhla landfill sites on Wednesday and Thursday respectively to stage the protest, but were stopped by the police.

The BJP, which ruled three municipal corporations for nearly 15 years, retaliated, accusing Kejriwal and his MLAs of spreading lies.

“Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is running a university of lies”, Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta alleged on Friday after AAP’s claim that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is planning to build 16 more landfill sites here to dump garbage.

Three former municipal corporations in Delhi were controlled by the BJP, and the AAP was the main opposition party until the municipal bodies’ term expired in May and the three bodies were united to form one MCD.

Elections are yet to be held to form the new body. The central government has fixed the total number of seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at 250 from the existing figure of 272. This was stated in the Delhi Gazette notification issued on Saturday.
