The incident came to light when a city-based lawyer noticed that the man was going to the drain to clean without any safety equipment.

The Commercial Street Police on Friday registered a case against Amrita Construction Pvt Ltd under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act for hiring a laborer to remove silt from a drain on Infantry Road.

The incident came to light when city lawyer Vinay K. Srinivas, on his way to the office, saw a man going to the drain to clean with a bucket. He alleged that the victim was not given any safety equipment and was struggling to clear the blockage.

The laborer told Srinivas that his owner Ravi had asked Amrita Construction Pvt Ltd to clean the drain and remove the silt.

Srinivas called Ravi, who admitted that he was getting the drain cleaned on the basis of a task assigned to him by the residents of Infantry Road. The police have summoned Ravi for questioning for further investigation.
