Cabinet approves Rs 10,000 crore for facelift of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad railway stations

The government has approved redevelopment of major railway stations by using money from its own exchequer instead of going for public private partnership (PPP), finally bringing clarity on the funding mechanism for these mega projects.

PM. Union Cabinet headed by Narendra Modi Rs 10,000 crore approved for redevelopment of railway stations in New on Wednesday Delhi, Mumbai (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), and Ahmedabad Election in Gujarat. The work will be done under the engineering, procurement and construction model and the money will come from the government treasury only, Railway Minister ashwini vaishnav Giving information to the media on the decision of the cabinet, said.

“Railways caters to middle class and lower middle class so any additional burden on passengers is not good. Therefore, it has been decided to invest the budget money in the Railways. It is a conscious decision to redevelop all these stations under the EPC model,” he said.

Indian Express had previously reported the government’s intention to fund station redevelopment works directly rather than waiting for the PPP model to begin – a priority project to be overseen by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Vaishnav said the target is to complete the redevelopment of New Delhi station in three and a half years. The other two stations would be redeveloped in two-and-a-half years, he said, adding that the tenders would go out in about 10 days.

“The New Delhi station will integrate train services with buses, auto and metro rail services. The redesign of Ahmedabad station is inspired by the Sun Temple of Modhera. The heritage building of CSMT will not be touched but the surrounding buildings will be redeveloped,” he said.
