Suicidal thoughts: why people get them, warning signs to watch for and prevention – check out what the experts say

by Dr. Manish Jain

The act of intentionally taking one’s own life is known as suicide. Thoughts of ending one’s life or feeling that people would be better off without them become suicidal thoughts. There are people who think of ways to commit suicide or make concrete plans to take their own lives. Several factors are at work here. Suicidal thoughts can arise in a person for a variety of reasons, from mental health issues, substance abuse problems and the loss of loved ones to serious financial troubles.

Why do people have suicidal thoughts?

Mental and physical health complications, personal tragedies such as the loss of a loved one, severe financial crisis, the end of a romantic relationship and serious illnesses are some of the reasons that lead people to have suicidal thoughts. These people often feel overwhelmed and think that there is no way they can cope with the situation. Grief, rejection, and feelings of catastrophic events such as sexual abuse can lead people to suicidal thoughts.

Suicidal thoughts: signs and symptoms

A person with suicidal thoughts may show the following signs or symptoms:

• Talking about death and wanting to kill himself
• Excessive use of alcohol and drugs
• Isolating oneself and separating from family and friends
• Increased anxiety, distraction and carelessness
• Extreme mood swings
• Being aggressive and vindictive
• plagued by despair and the feeling that life is meaningless
• Difficulty sleeping
• Strange changes in everyday patterns
• Talking about being a burden to others
• Experiencing depression, panic attacks or impaired concentration

But remember, a large number of suicidal people keep their thoughts to themselves. So they don’t show any clear signs that anything is wrong.

Risk factors: what can lead to suicidal thoughts

There are some experiences and situations in life that can increase the likelihood of suicidal thoughts:

• Loss of friends, finances and loved ones
• Family history of violence, including suicide, substance abuse, mental disorders, and mental and sexual abuse
• Bullying at school or work
• Loneliness
• Substance Abuse Issues
• belong to the LGBTQIA+ community and experience hostility at home or at school/workplace
• Mental health conditions such as major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder can also cause it.

how to stop suicidal thoughts

Suicidal thoughts can vary in degree. Some people may sometimes wish they were dead but have no intention of attempting suicide. Still, even passive suicidal thoughts can be dangerous.

Here are some ways to manage suicidal thoughts:

1. The first step is to recognize the warning signs – such as feelings of hopelessness, feeling trapped or feeling like a burden to others. This may suggest that it is time to reach out for help.

2. Suicidal thoughts hit hardest when you are in a potentially dangerous area or situation. Standing on the balcony of a high-rise building, you may be overcome with a sense of carelessness when you say waiting for the subway train. Remove yourself from such precarious positions.

3. Take deep, slow breaths. This will lower your heart rate as well as distract you from harmful thoughts. Also, relax your muscles.

4. Always tell yourself that things will get better. People remove dark thoughts and lead a happy life. If they can do it, so can you.

5. Surround yourself with loved ones who will help you overcome the feeling of being a burden to someone.

6. Most importantly, seek professional help. With the proper guidance of a physician, you will be able to identify potential triggers and explore the right treatment options.
