EXCLUSIVE: Can Alzheimer’s disease be prevented? Symptoms, Causes and Treatment of Dementia – What Doctors Say

World Alzheimer’s Month: September is the month when international campaigns are launched to raise awareness about the disease. Recently, on 21 September, countries also celebrated World Alzheimer’s Day. All of these are dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Dr. Sanjay Saxena, Senior Director and Head of the Department, Neurology, Max Hospital, Patparganj, says, “It is a degenerative disease and when the disease is in a very advanced stage, one may not be able to recognize oneself. This makes it extremely difficult to recognize. Makes a sad case.”

What is Alzheimer’s disease: the onset

Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia. And this is nothing new. As Dr. Saxena explains, “Earlier, when people started behaving a certain way by forgetting things, people would often say things like, ‘He lost it by age 60’. But that may be the beginning of the disease. can.”

Dementia vs Alzheimer’s: Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

Not all dementia is Alzheimer’s disease but Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. Dementia is included in the decline in memory, reasoning or any other thinking skill but there are other forms of dementia besides Alzheimer’s. Whatever you’ve learned over the years, your experience with dementia makes you slowly forget things. “Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. It is classical dementia that starts after 60, but in some people, about 10-20%, it can start in their 40s,” says Dr. Saxena.

He also says that not all forms of amnesia are Alzheimer’s. “Not all types of forgetting are dementia. You can have too much stuff in front of you, too many things to deal with, so you can’t focus and forget some things. It’s benign forgetfulness. Alzheimer’s dementia In the U.S., your personality changes too. There may be confusion in performing daily activities – you may forget where the bedroom or kitchen is in your home! As the disease progresses, forgetfulness increases. People may forget names and they may themselves It is very sad that we can also forget about it,” says Dr. Saxena.

Alzheimer’s disease: causes and treatment

Doctors say that Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain disease and what makes it challenging is that its exact causes are not known. “Medical science has not advanced that far when it comes to the brain, compared to other organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. The exact causes of Alzheimer’s are not known. Stress – all of these can have an effect in reducing the severity of the disease, especially in the early stages.”

When it comes to treatment, there is no medicine that can cure or completely cure Alzheimer’s. “Since we do not know the exact cause, there is no root cause cure. However, if detected early, we can manage the disease,” says Dr. Saxena. He adds, “There are drugs in the form of tablets, body patches – where the drug is slowly released into the blood – and injections. Sometimes, dementia occurs for secondary causes and, if they can be treated, the disease are again well managed. But we must remember that in advanced stages, the drug has limited use.”

Counseling is important – for both the patient and the caregiver. As Dr. Saxena explains, “With early diagnosis, proper care and counselling, we can ensure dignity for the patient. Also, it heavily impacts the caregivers, so their counseling is also important.”
