Colon cancer survivors benefit more from physical activity

Even though many colon cancer patients first outgrow the disease, up to a third of them experience a cancer recurrence, which is often fatal.

Prior to this investigation the effect of different types and intensity of physical activity on disease recurrence and death in colon cancer survivors was unknown. Patients are encouraged by current clinical recommendations to avoid inaction.

Types of Activities That Can Help Colon Cancer Survivors

“Survivors of colon cancer are generally best told to avoid inactivity. However, many patients seek specific guidance on the types of activity that can maximize their chances of cure. This study is designed to help oncologists and their patients.” provides specific information on exactly what type of activity will be most helpful in their goal of staying alive and cancer-free, said Justin Brown, PhD, director of the Pennington Biomedical Cancer Metabolism Program, who led the study. What we found is that large amounts of recreational physical activity, long periods of light- to moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, or no vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity were associated with the highest chances of survival and cancer-free survival. Patients first identify a physical activity they enjoy and then look at study results to determine how much of that activity is needed to achieve such health benefits. If you enjoy the activity, you are more likely to stick with it over time. ,

The research was conducted as part of an ongoing National Cancer Institute (NCI) experiment, which examined several pharmaceutical treatments for colon cancer patients undergoing surgery. The patient lasted for about six years.

“We were fortunate to be able to conduct this study as an offshoot of the NCI study. By conducting this study within the NCI trial, we eliminated many of the common limitations of prior studies to allow us to What will benefit the patient and what may not,” Brown said.

Pennington said, “We know that healthy lifelong habits can make a difference in the overall health of cancer survivors. This cutting-edge research project provides patients with specific recommendations on how they can regain some level of control against a disease. Huh.” Biomedical Executive Director John Keenan, Ph.D.

The journal article includes extensive graphics explaining the benefits of different forms of physical activity and the recommended weekly dosage for achieving disease-free survival.
