5 Bad Everyday Habits That Can Cause Diabetes – Don’t Do These And Keep Blood Sugar Under Control!

High blood sugar or diabetes can adversely affect our lives in many ways. This can lead to serious health complications. While part of it, like most diseases, is genetic, poor lifestyle choices can also lead to diabetes. There are many everyday practices that we can’t think twice about that can lead to an increase in insulin levels in our blood. Here are five bad habits that can lead to diabetes:

1) Sitting in one place continuously for hours

Being a couch potato has serious health complications! And even when you’re working hard at the office, remember that when your mind is working, your body is not. Sitting in one position for a long time is not good for our metabolism. So keep going! Sometimes, this may not be possible, but whenever the opportunity comes, go for it. Whether you’re working at the office or binge-watching shows, take a break, go for a walk, or do some brisk exercise before settling down again. Several studies have shown that if you manage to replace half an hour of a sedentary life with some exercise, it reduces your chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

2) Eating refined carbs

The Indian diet is usually heavy on carbohydrates. While carbs have their benefits too, nutritionists say that people should replace their refined carbs with complex carbs. So go for brown rice instead of white rice; Avoid refined flour and choose whole grain bread instead of white bread. Refined carbs lead to an increase in blood sugar levels and as they are easily digested, we feel hungry quickly.

3) Not getting enough sleep

This is literally a new pandemic the world is going through! An increasing number of people are sleeping less than the desired eight hours a day and this has serious health implications that we are not aware of. Be it the pressure of corporate life to work late, our habit of binge watching shows and most importantly, our obsession with smartphones – people are waking up before their bedtime. Lack of sleep on a regular basis can lead to hormonal imbalance, which increases the risk of diabetes. People have an unnatural appetite if they sleep poorly, and this means they may consume unnecessary carbs and sweets, which affects blood insulin levels.

4) drinking sugary drinks

It may sound obvious, but most of us are guilty of it! Even if we abstain from carbonated drinks, we often have fruit juices with a lot of added sugar, and that’s just as bad. Juice is good for health, but consume fresh juices without added sugar. Avoid carbonated drinks, even if the hot sun tempts you to crave that cold soda. When you’re having a shake with milk, try to choose low-fat, skimmed milk.
