What top banks charge for ATM, Debit cards: All you need to know

Banking Services Charges You Should Know

Banks offer many services for free, but there are some that come with a fee. As a customer, you must be aware of the different fees and charges of banks.

Often, customers are not even aware of many charges. You should collect all the information you need when opening an account or purchasing their products.

Here are some common charges levied by State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.

debit card fee

Most debit cards are free for account holders, but in some cases, there are issuance/connection fees, annual fees and card replacement fees, etc.

For SBI, the joining fee for some debit cards can be as high as Rs 300, while the annual fee ranges from Rs 125 to Rs 350. The replacement fee for a debit card is Rs 300.


For PNB, the joining fee for some debit cards is Rs 250, while the annual fee can go up to Rs 500. The replacement fee for PNB Debit Card is Rs 150.


For HDFC Bank, the joining and annual fee for a debit card ranges from Rs 200 to Rs 750, and the card replacement fee is around Rs 200.


The joining fee for different debit cards for ICICI Bank can be up to Rs 1,999. The annual fee for the debit card ranges from Rs 99 to Rs 1,499.


All banks charge Rs 50 for duplicate/regeneration of PIN.

Minimum average balance requirement

Banks require a minimum monthly average balance in your monthly savings account. Some banks levy a penalty if the customer fails to maintain the minimum balance.

There is no penalty for not maintaining the minimum average balance for SBI’s regular savings account.


Punjab National Bank charges a fee for not maintaining quarterly average balance in savings accounts. For non-maintenance of minimum average balance, there is a penalty of Rs 400 and Rs 600 per quarter for rural and urban areas respectively.


For HDFC Bank regular savings account, a penalty ranging from Rs 150 to Rs 600 is levied for non-maintenance of minimum average balance depending on the actual average monthly balance (AMB) of the account.

ICICI Bank levies a penalty of 6% of the shortfall in the required minimum average balance or Rs 500, whichever is lower, for non-maintenance of monthly average balance.

duplicate statement

Banks charge even when customers want a duplicate copy of their account statement. All four banks charge Rs 100 for duplicate statement in physical form.

ATM fee

SBI charges customers Rs 10 for using SBI ATMs more than six times in a month and Rs 20 for using ATMs of other banks beyond the free limit.


PNB charges customers Rs 10 for using PNB ATMs more than 5 times in a month and Rs 20 for using other bank’s ATMs.


HDFC Bank charges Rs 21 for withdrawing cash from HDFC Bank ATMs more than five times in a month and using other bank’s ATMs more than three times.

ICICI Bank charges a flat charge of Rs 21 for using the ATM more than five times in a month and more than thrice at a different bank’s ATM.


international banking fees

ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank charge 3.5 per cent of the amount when making international transactions using debit cards and transacting in other currencies. SBI and PNB charge 3 per cent for POS and e-commerce transactions.

For international money transfer (outside), ICICI Bank charges between Rs 500 to Rs 1000. HDFC Bank charges Rs 500 to 1,000. PNB charges 0.125 per cent of the transaction, with a minimum of Rs 500, plus an additional Rs 100 for SWIFT transfers.

SBI charges customers from Rs 35 to Rs 7,000 for similar transactions.

NEFT charges

For NEFT, IMPS and RTGS transfers, ICICI Bank charges Rs 2.25 to Rs 45. HDFC charges its customers between Rs 2 and Rs 15. SBI charges its customers between Rs 2 and Rs 40. PNB charges Rs 2 to Rs 49.50 from its customers.
