Recently, Google has become known for more than just its search service and the Play Store. The Silicon Valley company is now known for its impressive smartphones that offer high quality cameras. Although its Pixel 6a phone arrived in India quite late in July, it has received a good reception in the country.

The flagship phone offered a clean stock Android experience with regular security updates, and it ships with pure Android 12 without any pre-installed apps other than Google’s own. This also means that it is bloatware free, a problem that affects many other Android devices.

And just as the company is looking to launch its next smartphone, the Pixel 7, next month, reports have emerged that the Alphabet-owned company may be making some of its Pixel phones. IndiaAccording to a report by The Information.

The company’s decision to consider India comes amid the COVID-19 lockdown in China and Beijing’s escalating tensions with Washington. Global supply chains were hit earlier this year as China closed major tech hub Shanghai due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. Recently, the US banned the export of some high-end chips to China, raising tensions with the Asian nation.

According to the report, CEO Sundar Pichai had previewed plans to make the device in India earlier this year, but no final decision has been taken yet. If approved, India’s production operations would still require the import of components from China.

According to the report, Google is said to have invited bids from manufacturers in India to make between 500,000 and one million Pixel smartphones. This could be as high as 10% to 20% of the estimated annual production of the smartphone. Another Nikkei report said the search giant was also looking at Vietnam as another potential manufacturing base.
